Antelopes
Black Buck or Kala Hiran is common name for a kind of antelope which is mainly of India but also found with small populations in Pakistan and Nepal. These antelopes have ringed horns with moderate spiral twist of three to four turns and are up to 70 cm (28 in) long. The adult males stand about 80 cm (about 32 in) at the shoulder and weighs 32 to 43 kg (71 to 95 lb). Their upper side of body remains black but both under-part and a ring around the eyes are white. The light-brown females are usually hornless. Males are dark brown. When the rut (mating season) reaches at peak, one male establishes dominance.
Kala Hiran also called Indian Black Buck Antelope (Antelope cervicapra L.). It has four sub species, they are:
» Antelope cervicapra cervicapra
» Antelope cervicapra rajputanae
» Antelope cervicapra centralis
» Antelope cervicapra rupicapra
In old days, blackbucks were found all over in India excepting the northeast part. But now they are only seen in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and central India. They live in open plains instead of dense forests.

Blackbucks are undisputedly one of the gorgeous but fastest antelopes all over the world. Being found only in Indian regions, we know these antelopes as Indian antelopes, blackbuck or kala hiran. The black buck has ringed horns that have a moderate spiral twist of three to four turns and are up to 70 cm (28 in) long.
The males become dark at their maturity and the most dominant male in the herd is found with black coat. However, their entire body remains black but ring around eyes, ears, chin, under part and rump highlights with white.
They mainly eat grasses and live in plains instead of dense forests. Pods, fruits, and flowers are known as their supplement diets. Their maximum lifespan is sixteen years but only few live longer than twelve years. October and March to April are their meeting seasons.
