Wildlife Species - Tiger
India is a heaven to hundreds of wildlife species that covers mammals, reptiles, and birds. Varied climate and terrains make this land ideal for a huge wildlife stock. We know that carnivore species lead all the animals and in case of Indian forests, there are hundreds of different carnivores in which tigers are considered as one of the cruellest killers. They live everywhere in Indian jungles, whether these are abundant with greenery or struggle for water.

Scientific Name: Panthera Tigris

Estimated Population: According to recent census reports, tabled by ministry of environment and forests, there are about 1,157 to 1,165 tigers in Indian jungles

Habitat and Distribution: Tigers are widely spread from the alpine Himalayas to the rain forest of Southern Western Ghats and even from dry forests of Rajasthan to the moist forest of north east India.

Unique Characteristics: Among all the predators, tiger is known as one of the largest and most awesome cat in the world. This species unquestionably fascinates every eye it meets. Their body length can range between 275 to 290 cm in males and up to 260 cm in females. Tiger is a solitary animal and the territory of an adult male may encompass authority of two to seven females. It is carnivorous and hunts for prey primarily by sight and sound. It feeds on deer, wild pig, and bovid and sometimes on other predators like leopards and bears.

Tigers carry the genus of species Panthera Tigris and are known as the master hunter among all the cats. They are easily identified from their typically orange and black stripped. However some of them are found with over white shade because of their genetic mutation.

Among all the tigers, Bengal Tigers are the most distinctive as their white shade make them different from their counterparts, living in India and other part of world.

Indian Bengal Tigers are distributed throughout the humid forest and grasslands of Bangladesh, China, Nepal and India. The Bengal Tiger is India's national emblem and was declared so prior to 2500 B.C.
